Sanctuary of Rivotorto

t the foot of Mount Subasio, one finds the section called Rivotorto, about 3 kms from Assisi. Here the principal episodes of the life of Francis have happened.
When the Saint decided to abandon wealth and to live in absolute poverty, he chose a hovel by Rivotorto, a rude hut in stone with a roof of branches, already used as a refuge by the peasants, next to a brook. In this place Francis lived for two years with his first companions.
In 1455, a small Church was built about the hovel, which was then widened in 1671. The Sanctuary that we see today is a Neogothic Church , built after the earthquake of 1854 on the rubbles of the church of the XVII century. The attached Convent, built at the end of the XVII century, has also been reconstructed after the earthquake of 1854.
